Ottawa Rent Increase Guideline for 2007 set at 2.6 %

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing released the province’s rent increase guideline for 2007. The 2007 guideline will be 2.6 %, the third-lowest guideline in the history of rent regulation in Ontario.

The annual guideline is the maximum amount that most landlords can increase a tenant’s rent without making an application to the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal. Most tenants in Ontario receive an annual rent increase that is at or below the rent increase guideline. The 2007 guideline is effective from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2007.

This is up from 2.1 % for 2006.

Starting with 2005, the government removed the 2% bonus for landlords that had first been brought in under the Peterson Liberal government's Residential Rent Regulation Act of 1986.
